Accessing urgent healthcare when you GP practice is not open 
NHS 111 Wales and Out of Hours Service

If you need urgent medical advice or treatment that is not a life-threatening emergency and the surgery is closed, please contact NHS 111 Wales by visiting 111.wales.nhs.uk or by calling 111.

The NHS 111 Wales website provides a wide range of health information, including symptom checkers, self-care advice, and details of local health services. We encourage patients to use the website as their first point of contact whenever possible.

Out of Hours Care

The Out of Hours Service provides urgent medical care when the practice is closed, including evenings, weekends, and Bank Holidays. If your condition cannot wait until the surgery reopens, please contact NHS 111 for advice and assistance.

In an Emergency

If you have a life-threatening medical emergency, such as:

  • Severe chest pain
  • Signs of a stroke
  • Severe bleeding
  • Collapse or unconsciousness
  • Serious breathing difficulties

Call 999 immediately or attend your nearest Emergency Department (A&E).

For urgent mental health support call 111 and press OPTION 2.

The service is available for people of all ages, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in all areas of Wales to ensure those in need of support can access it quickly when they need it most.

If you need to talk to someone urgently about your mental health, or you’re concerned about a family member, call NHS 111 Wales and select option 2 to be placed in direct contact with a mental health professional in your area.

The number is free to call from a landline or mobile, even if you have no credit left.

Minor Injuries Units

Adults and children aged over one with the following conditions can visit our Minor Injury Unit (MIU) for assessment and treatment: 

Please note: we can only assess and treat injuries that happened within the last four weeks. If your injury happened more than 4 weeks ago, you will need to contact your GP.

  • Injuries to the limbs and minor injuries to the head, face, neck, back and chest 
  • Human, animal or insect bites 
  • Minor burns or scalds 
  • Wounds or grazes 
  • Foreign bodies in ears, noses and soft tissues
