LGBTQ+ and Transgender Patients

At Practice 2, Keir Hardie Health Park, we are committed to providing a safe, welcoming and inclusive service for all patients, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, non-binary and other LGBTQ+ people.

We believe everyone should be treated with dignity, respect and compassion. We do not tolerate discrimination, harassment or prejudice of any kind. Inclusive healthcare is an important part of reducing health inequalities and improving patient experience.

Names, Titles and Pronouns

If you would like us to use a preferred name, title or pronouns, please let a member of our team know. We will do our best to ensure your medical record reflects how you wish to be addressed, in line with NHS systems and professional guidance. Using a person's chosen name and pronouns is recognised as an important aspect of respectful care.

Transgender and Non-binary Patients

If you are transgender, non-binary, or questioning your gender identity, your GP can:

  • Discuss your healthcare needs.
  • Provide general medical care and support.
  • Signpost or refer to appropriate specialist services where indicated.
  • Advise on screening and preventative healthcare.

GPs are often the first point of contact for people seeking support regarding gender identity and should provide care respectfully and without bias.

Screening Information

Some NHS screening invitations are generated according to the gender recorded on NHS systems. This means that some transgender and non-binary patients may not automatically receive invitations for all screening tests relevant to their anatomy.

For example, individuals with a cervix may require cervical screening and individuals with breast tissue may require breast screening, regardless of gender identity. If you are unsure which screening programmes are appropriate for you, please contact the practice. Please access our NHS screening page for more information: NHS Screening Programmes in Wales - Practice 2 Keir Hardie Health Park

Confidentiality

We respect your privacy and confidentiality. Information about your sexual orientation, gender identity or trans status will only be shared in accordance with NHS confidentiality requirements and when necessary for your care.
