Diabetes care

Diabetes (otherwise known by the scientific name Diabetes Mellitus) is a complicated condition where your blood glucose level is too high.

There are mainly two types of diabetes - type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 usually first develops in children or in young adults. Type 2 usually first develops in people over the age of 40 years and is often (though not always) associated with being overweight. However, type 2 diabetes is increasingly being diagnosed in children and in young adults.

Both types of diabetes can cause serious complications. With regular monitoring and good control of the raised blood sugars these can be significantly reduced. In addition to the treatment from healthcare professionals, it is very important for people with diabetes to understand their condition and be able to manage their diabetes.

Prediabetes

Some people may have a blood sugar level that is higher than usual, but not high enough to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. This is called prediabetes, and means you’re at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
